- Resources Used: Library books, internet websites and databases
- Grade Levels: 5th grade
- Lesson Goal: The goals of this lesson were to familiarize students with different career paths available to them when they get older, to learn how to research using the internet, and to learn how to publicly speak.

- How do you know the goal was achieved? We did not receive our computers until June 12th so we were not able to complete this project.

  1. Tips on implementing at another school: Make sure that you have an extensive collection of career books at different reading levels available for the students. Also, on your library home page, have links to different career sites so that it is easily accessible for the children.

  1. Plans for usage of material next year: The computers will be accessible to the entire school community. Having these computers will provide me with the tools to plan and implement collaborative lessons that incorporate information literacy standards, Common Core Standards and AASL skills that will equip my students to successfully acquire, analyze, synthesize information resources and become independent, motivated and confident learners.





Lesson Plans: Career Fair Day
Lesson 1: What do I want to be when I grow up? (1 period)
Display various career books and discuss different aspects of each career/job.
The students will browse through the books and choose a career/job that interests them.
As a class, each student will discuss why they chose that career/job, what they know about it, and what they hope to learn about it.
Lesson 2: How can I find out more about my career/job? (3 periods)
Display Library Homepage.
Go to links for Bureau of Labor Statistics and the Occupational Handbook sites. Show students how to navigate to find information on their career/job. (Day 1)
Go to links Career Kids, Career Planning, and Simply Hired sites. Show students how to navigate to find information on their career/job. (Day 2)
Students will use the library computers to search for information on their career using the above links. Students will also use the books in the library to take notes on their careers. They will use the ‘Using Multiple Sources’ organizer to take notes.
This lesson will take place over 3 periods.
Lesson 3: What do I do with my notes? (2 periods)
Students will design their career brochures using their notes and blank paper.
Lesson 4: How do I put it all together? (3 periods)
Students will use the iMacs to create their brochures and flyers to hand out at the Career Fair Day.
Lesson 5: Pre – Career Day (1 period)
Students will practice speaking publicly about their career using their brochure/flyer. They will also practice answering questions about their careers from their classmates.
Lesson 6: Career Fair Day (1 period)
Students will dress like their careers and hold a Career Fair Day for other 5th grade classes.
